Volumetric Weight and Box Sizing
International air carriers calculate charges using chargeable weight—the greater of physical scale weight and volumetric dimensional weight.
- Actual Scale Weight: The physical weight of the packed carton measured in kilograms.
- Volumetric Weight: The volume of the box in centimeters divided by the standard international air courier divisor (5000): Example volumetric weight (kg) = length (cm) × width (cm) × height (cm) ÷ 5,000
Why Box Size Matters
When light items are packed into an oversized carton, you pay for the empty space inside the box. For example, a 6 kg box of clothing packed into an oversized 50 cm × 40 cm × 40 cm carton has an example volumetric weight of 16.0 kg (80,000 ÷ 5,000) and is billed at 16 kg when that divisor applies.
By contrast, packing the same clothing into a well-fitted 40 cm × 30 cm × 25 cm box reduces the example volumetric weight to 6.0 kg (30,000 ÷ 5,000).
